Typically a SUBARU differential receives its power input from the transmission, and then drives two wheels with its output.  One purpose is to allow for a difference in rotation speed between the two driven wheels while cornering.  AWD (all-wheel drive)SUBARU's have a separate differential front and rear wheels.
